Jobs in Tasmania 2026: Top Industries, Major Employers and Salary Guide

Tasmania's Employment Landscape

Tasmania's economy has undergone a remarkable resurgence over the past decade. Hobart is now one of Australia's most desirable cities for lifestyle-driven relocation, and this has driven a property boom, hospitality and tourism surge, and growing professional services economy. Outside Hobart, Launceston, Devonport, and Burnie offer employment in manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and education.

Major Employment Sectors

State government and public sector, Tasmania has a large public sector relative to its population. The Tasmanian Government employs thousands directly across health, education, infrastructure, and community services. The Commonwealth also has a significant Hobart presence (particularly CSIRO and the Australian Antarctic Division).

Healthcare, the Royal Hobart Hospital, Launceston General Hospital, and a network of private hospitals and community health services are Tasmania's largest employers. Tasmanian Health Service (THS) faces chronic staffing challenges, meaning healthcare professionals who relocate often find both work and attractive packages.

Tourism and hospitality, Tasmania's transformation into one of Australia's premier tourism destinations has created sustained hospitality employment. Luxury lodges (Saffire Freycinet, Pumphouse Point), MONA-related venues, and a booming restaurant scene in Hobart and Launceston have all grown employment.

Agriculture and food, dairy, salmon farming (Huon Aquaculture, Tassal), berry and cherry production, and premium food products (cool climate wine, truffles, whisky) employ significant numbers across regional Tasmania.

Research and science, the University of Tasmania, CSIRO's Hobart campus, and the Australian Antarctic Division provide research employment. Hobart is Australia's gateway to Antarctica, a unique employer for scientists, logistics specialists, and support staff.
